Setting Goals in Life

When setting goals in life, do you think of what you would like to be doing in, say, five years? Are you certain about your main goals in life? Do you even know what you want to have achieved by the end of today?

If you are hungry for success, then you have to set goals. Without these, you will lack direction and focus. Setting goals not only provides you with the opportunity to take control of your life’s direction. It also offers a benchmark for determining whether your goals are actually coming to fruition.

Consider this: Having a lot of money in the bank can be proof of financial success… IF one of your set goals is to amass riches. But, if your goal is to become more charitable, keeping the money for your own use becomes contrary to the definition of success.

In order to achieve goals in life, one needs to know the right way to set them. You cannot simply proclaim that you want and expect, it to magically happen.

Setting goals is a process that begins with carefully considering what you want to achieve and is then followed by taking daily action towards their attainment. There must be well-defined action-steps that transcend the details of each life goal. Being aware of what these steps are, allows you to formulate goals that can actually be accomplished.

Below, we take a look at 2 golden rules of setting goals in life
1. Set motivating goals

Whenever you set goals, it is important that they motivate you i.e. they ought to be important to you and there must be value in achieving them. If the goals you set are irrelevant to the bigger picture or if you have little interest in their outcome, then the chances of you working hard to realize them are slim. Motivation is paramount in achieving goals.

When looking for powerful motivation in setting goals in life, it is helpful to look beyond the goal. Focussing on your “why” can accomplish this. If your goal is to make more money, WHY do you want more money? What will that money provide for you? If the answer is more stuff, then WHY do you want more stuff? The layers of this onion can go deep, and the deeper you go, this easier it becomes to find your true motivation.

It is thus advisable to set goals that are related to the high-priority areas of your life. Without such singular focus, you are likely to end up with too many goals, leaving you with little time to devote to each one. Achieving life goals calls for commitment, so in order for you to maximize your chances of success, you will want to create a sense of urgency encapsulated in an “I must get this done” attitude.

In the absence of having an “I must do this” attitude, you risk putting off the things that need to get done in order to transform your goals into reality. In turn, you are likely to be left frustrated and disappointed with yourself which ultimately leads to de-motivation and a destructive frame of mind reinforced by thoughts that you cannot do anything well or be a successful achiever.

2. Practice setting SMART life goals

You may already be familiar with the concept of SMART goals. The simple truth is that for your goals to be powerful, they ought to be designed in a SMART manner. There are numerous variations of this but the essence of SMART is that your goals should be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

· Specific-

Your goals must be well defined and clear. Generalized or vague goals are unhelpful as they do not provide a proper direction. Goals are meant to show you the way, so make them as precise as possible so that you can be able to get where you want.

· Measurable-

Include precise dates, amounts etc. when setting goals in life so that you are able to measure your success later on. If your goal is, say, to be more successful, how can you measure your success? Put your definition of success into terms that can be measured. If you are unable to measure your success, you could miss out on the joy that comes with achievement.

· Attainable-

Ensure that you set life goals that are achievable because if you set those that are unattainable, you will only erode your confidence and demoralize yourself. However, ignore the urge to set extremely easy goals as accomplishing goals that you did not really have to apply yourself to can be anti-climactic at best. Set life goals that are doable, but challenging. If you’re not challenging yourself, you won’t grow.

· Relevant –

Goals ought to be relevant to the direction you want your career and life to take. By directing your goals, you will develop the focus get ahead AND do what you truly want as well. Set inconsistent and widely scattered goals and you will waste your life and time away.

· Time-Bound-

Your goals should have a deadline i.e. knowing when you can celebrate success. When working on deadlines, one’s sense of urgency increases which means that achievement will come that much sooner. Choose a reasonable deadline and then shorten it a bit. That will light a fire under your ass. Plus, it will help to create a sense of urgency which will motivate you to take more action.

By following these two golden rules of setting goals in life, you will become an unstoppable achiever!
